By now, we all know that Assemblymember Miguel Santiago singlehandedly gutted SB 822 on behalf of AT&T. While donating to his general election opponent is a great idea, unseating Santiago in the coming election will (1) be a long shot, unfortunately, and (2) will take too long.
From a legislative process perspective, the problem is that Santiago used his authority as a committee chair to essentially hold the bill hostage and force passage of his amendments. The Assembly leadership can strip him of his leadership posts so that this cannot happen again.
The best recourse is to push for Santiago to be stripped of his committee leadership positions. Call Assembly Speaker Anthony Rendon at (916) 319-2063 and DEMAND that Miguel Santiago be permanently stripped of his position as Chair of the Assembly Committee on Communications and Conveyance.
